Sergio Sergio // Line Up
|
SERGIO SERGIO @ BOX | GIG REVIEW Friday 25th January saw Glasgow based funk/rock band Sergio Sergio take to the Box stage. Combining an edgy guitar sound with a hint of funk, this band have been around since 2010, with a singer-change along the way in the form of Lee Given which completed the Sergio Sergio sound when he impressed them with his audition in 2012. A handful of songs are available online, the five-piece have built up a modest recognition on the internet and across Glasgow. Box has always been a popular source of up and coming indie bands for Glasgow's music scene and the musical talent available from the five bands taking the stage varied from the unadventurous and wooden to plain outstanding. One of the other bands that deserves a mention is "Three Card Trick" who wowed the crowd with a bluesy sound and a great stage presence. Once Sergio Sergio had taken the stage, a good sized crowd had built up to see the band play in the intimate setting. Their set began with an intro; a slow build up into the first song which introduced the crowd to the Sergio Sergio sound. The first thing to notice about this sound is the inherent skill and talent from the bassist, McInally. Showing this talent through a mixture of slap-bass, upbeat funky riffs and an altogether tight execution, McInally provided a beating heart to the funk-rock sound. Given graced the stage with confidence and it is hard, once you see this, to remember that he has been part of the group for two years less than everybody else. Murmurs from the crowd began the performance, partly wondering if Russell Brand had found his way to Box stage and if this was indeed the only man who could pull off tartan jammies. Given immediately silenced the crowd with his powerful addition to the Sergio Sergio mix. The boys managed to conquer the set pleasing the crowd with tracks such as Vanguard Siren and Who Are You. They maintained a professional attitude which allowed them to play even through the drummer's burst snare drum. A high energy performance from Carberry completed the evening of sound with funky guitar solos and comfortable interaction with everyone on stage. Each musician had their moment to shine during the night, meaning the music was something the crowd could get excited about. They were also treated to an evening of effortless banter back and forth with the band, with good-humoured hits taken on both sides and creating a close, intimate atmosphere. The performance warranted an encore which Sergio Sergio delivered without hesitation, getting the crowd dancing with an upbeat funky number. They let themselves entirely loose for the last song of the evening, hitting the crowd with a wall of sound and an air that they really did enjoy themselves tonight. Altogether a different kind of sound with a high talent, energetic performance given. Sergio Sergio's funky heart, cut with a healthy dose of rock provides an entirely different sound and a fresh alternative tone. |
